Now I am of a certain age, I qualify for and now have, a Railcard. It has not been put to much use since March, so on Thursday Derek and I decided to make the most of a promised day of fine weather.

Cardiff was the chosen destination and after an hour's train journey, we arrived in the capital of Wales. The choice between shopping and walking to Cardiff Bay was taken, the latter being the winner. Forty minutes later we were in the hustle and bustle that is the result of the regeneration in 1999 from Tiger bay to Cardiff Bay. More information can be found here.

The vast Millennium Centre building, Derek looks minute!

The Millennium Centre building is the first landmark we saw and it is certainly imposing. Visitors are able to enjoy coffee and refreshments inside and also book and go to see the many shows and plays on offer all year round. The venue can also be hired out.

Man made beach

Walking along the Bay, many bars and restaurants can be seen. For the summer holidays, a man made beach has been formed, along with a fairground with many rides and even a seaside 'train' to take visitors around the sights. The views around the Bay are lovely when the weather is sunny. Wind surfers were having a great time!

Pleasure boats take people around the Bay and in fine weather, this is proving to be very successful with holiday makers and locals alike. Plenty of seats are situated all around the walking areas, so it is an ideal place for young and old alike.

Waiting for lunch in the sunshine

We had a light lunch and then met up with Oapschatters Bob and Denise for an hour. They showed us the Red Dragon complex which is home to cinema screens, bowling, restaurants, casino and even a gym!

Denise and I sitting down and reminiscing

We had a cuppa and a chat. Denise was in secondary school with me in the mid sixties and she brought along some Beatles photos to show us from all those years ago.

We both used to be huge Beatles fans and so these photos brought back happy memories. Here is a montage of some of them to share with you.

All too soon, it was time to catch the train back to Hereford. A thoroughly enjoyable day and we will definitely go back there again before too long.
